Show 'n Drive: So. Cal. Cruisin'

fun day of food, driving and Volkswagens was the order of the day at the inaugural KaferCruise presented by VW Trends Magazine.

The event, which drew a remarkable 138 Volkswagens and over 400 enthusiasts joined the magazine staff and paraded the streets of various Southern California communities. Beginning at Vee Dub Parts Unlimited in Huntington Beach, the route continued to a handful of the world's most famous Volkswagen shops, including West Coast Classic Restorations, Performance Technology, Topline and Rancho Performance Tranaxles among others.

Complete with a classic Poker run, those who finished with the best hands received various prizes from a number of participating sponsors, including BUGPACK, Sewfine Interiors and Coker Tires.

After covering roughly 100 miles and building quite an appetite, appropriately enough, the drive ended up at the original Baja-style grille, Wahoo's Fish Tacos in Yorba Linda, where everyone was treated to a delicious complimentary lunch.

Part of the event's success was attributed to members of various Southern California-based clubs, including DKP, Strictly Vintage, Uber Alles, Airspeed VW and (VTO) Vintage Transport Owners, among many more.

Cost of the drive was $10 per VW, with all proceeds benefiting CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County).

"This is fantastic," said Peter Andersen of nearby Bolsa Chica, who drove his '69 Beetle. "I hope you guys do it again next year."

Hearing overwhelmingly similar sentiments from others on hand leaves little doubt the first-time event will emerge even bigger and better next time around.

"It was never our intent to promote our own event," said Editor Ryan Price, who incidentally drove his '67 Sedan. "We just felt the need to bring together a number of our readers and show them a good time. Southern California has near perfect year-round weather and where else can you visit a half-dozen VW shops all within a few miles of each other."
