How To Build A Hot Rod Vw

We Take a Look at a Breed of Aircooled VWs Inspired by '40s-to-'60s Hot Rods
Volkswagen Beetle Front Passenger Side
A Swedish gearhead named Tobias Joelson built this mean cruiser, based on a very ripe Oval Window. Instead of extending the wheelbase, he shortened the body by taking out a six-inch slice behind the doors. The chopped roof welcomes a split window from a '48 Bug! (Photo: Serge LeFlohic, Super VW).

Three Hot Rods, three different looks. From left to right, these models could have been built respectively in the '40s (wire wheels), the '50s (solid rims and whitewall tires), and the '60s (flashy metallic paintjob). You may consider styling hues from a specific era when building your own Hot Rod VW.

Volkswagen Beetle Rear View Engine
Our friend Paul Knight, the Editor of Ultra VW Mag in England, built a bitchin' Hot Rod Oval--be patient as it is coming soon to the pages of VWT. The engine features velocity stacks modeled after some units seen on Stromberg 97s, carburetors popular with the V8 Hot Rod crowd.

Here is a glove box featuring a cool pinstriping job, as seen on the Bug from one of our staff members. The iron cross was adopted by the Hot Rod crowd thanks in part to Ed "Bid Daddy" Roth.

Juan Luevanos flamed VW. They obviously share more than one detail, except for the price tag--$3500 in the case of Juan's Bug.

Club plaques and Mexican blankets (used to cover a well-worn upholstery) adorn a variety of Hot Rods and Customs.

This Hot Rod VW participated in last year's VW & Porsche Family Reunion (in Ohio). If memory serves us right, the owner extended the wheelbase by bolting a spacer between the front of the chassis and the axle beam.

Who said you can't build a Hot Rod based on a Bug? We ran an article about Fred Hidalgo's Grand National Roadster Show class winner in our June 2002 issue.

The very basic Rods from the '40s--Fred's main source of inspiration were built with budget in mind, using many scrapyard parts. This explains the choice of seats for example. Crude and simple as they liked them after WWII...
Fiat Topolino Front View
Hidalgo told us he was quite influenced by the shape of Fiat Topolino drag cars when he conceived his ride. Here is a street-driven Topolino to give you an idea. Do you see the resemblance?

More pinstripes... It takes an artist a long time to master the proportion and symmetry of such pieces.

Paintings, pinstripes, sculptures, clothing... They are all important elements of the current Hot Rod revival. We spotted this artist at Mooneyes' Rat Fink Reunion last December.

You never know what will show up at the VWTrends Charity Cruise! We met Robert Ortiz and his mad Convertible at last year's event.
Volkswagen Beetle Woody Passenger Side
If Coupes, Sedans or Roadsters aren't your cup of tea, why not craft something else like this Moon disc-equipped VW Woody built by Mooneyes? Maybe not 100-percent Hot Rod, but cool nonetheless!

The lines of 1930s American cars have many traits in common with the Volkswagen Beetle. Note the pinup artwork on this five-window coupe, as well as the chromed air filters, two ideas you may consider for your own VW project.

Most Hot Rods display a mean stance coupled with great ingenuity. Take a look at the wild exhaust system fitted to the primered Sedan!

You will typically find a few pinstripers at most Hot Rod shows.

... but if you prefer the '60s look, you could try to locate a set of 15-inch American Racing rims. The one seen here are drilled in the Porsche bolt-pattern.

Pinstripes definitely belong to the Hot Rod scene.

Robert built his Hot Rod VW (or "Volks Rod" as he calls it) out of a wornout '70 Sedan. Whitewall Denman tires, measuring 600-15 and L78-15, wrap around stock VW rims.

Modifications to the back of the Beetle include a "big mouth" opening that welcomes a pair of motorcycle iron cross taillights and a recycled mesh grill. You can also catch sight of the homemade exhaust system with their tips exiting in front of each rear tire.

The gauges, surrounded by pinstripes by David Anthony Garcia, came from a Porsche 914. Some Hot Rodders like to install very tall shifters--the model chosen by Robert came from a Split Window Bus.

A shaped steel bar was molded around the cockpit in order to stiffen the body. A spun aluminum gas tank sits behind the rear seat, covered with diamond tuck.
Volkswagen Beetle Headlight
Swapping the torsion bars from the left side to the right and vice-versa allowed the wheelbase to be extended. The chrome headlights and club plaque are nice additions.

Juan has been wrenching on Hot Rods for 40 years. His latest project is this Beetle which he assembled in three months. A pair of handmade brackets bolted to the body support the headlights found at a swap meet.

The pinstripes dressing the tailgate cost Juan only $30. Stinger looks cool, but can be quite deafening during long distance runs.

The 15x5 and widened 15x8 Volkswagen wheels received a set of Fiesta hubcaps that can be purchased from Mooneyes.

The shortened bed, originally from an old Chevy Luv stepside pickup truck, was grafted to the rear of the Bug, after welding a custom-made panel behind the seats.
