Here's what we have to start with, four fender wells covered with the rubberized tar and years of dirt. Sprayed on about an eighth of an inch, undercoating can withstand most of what you can throw at it.

On the right, the undercoating has been removed because of some prior bodywork on the rear apron. What is left is a lightly rusted surface that will need to be tended to.

Over the course of the last 30-odd years, dirty and grime has built up in the nooks and crannies of the suspension mount points and the body-to-pan connections.

Up first is Auto Strip from Klean Strip, a paint remover touted as being able to "remove all finishes," so we thought it wouldn't hurt to try. On the back of the label, there's all kinds of warnings, including the one that says not to put it on your skin--yes, it burns.

It sprays on evenly and goes to work immediately, bubbling and sending off an incredibly horrible smell.

After the recommended 15-20 minutes curing time, a plastic scraper easily removes most of the undercoating. Aren't you glad you laid down plastic to catch it all. And if you're only wearing latex gloves (like we were), you'll soon notice the Auto Strip eating through the latex and burning your hands.

However, not all of it was removed, as you can see. Some patches of resilient undercoating wouldn't budge.

After a second coat of Auto Strip and the use of a metal scraper, the remaining undercoating came off easily along with patches of paint, which hasn't seen the light of day since it left the factory paint booth many, many moons ago.

We added another coat to see how good it would remove paint, and after the 20 minutes, and it immediately started to bubble up.

As you can see, it doesn't work too well. Sure, we were allowed a couple of good swipes with the stripping tool before the undercoating gummed up the fibers. The area we did get to use it on looked good, but it couldn't possibly hold up under the gunk of four fenders.

In the meantime, we took a look at the front fender and got out the power tools. The undercoating here isn't as thick as it is in the rear, but it still needs to be removed.
